Buses variables, comportement

Buteo buteo
Accipitriformes - Accipitridae

Common buzzard
Ah yes I know, some will say "buzzards again!"
Well yes, I love to observe them too, when we feed Red kites. And I can easily spend 5 to 6 hours in the hide since the 2 raptor species come quite late, rarely before 11h30 am or even to see around 15h00 pm; I get in the hide early in the morning in the hope to see a roe deer, but they are not often enough cooperative! I wait for the birds to be gone when I leave the hide to avoid their understanding of a presence under their nose!

8 or more buzzards can show up, counting both the local and wintering individuals). The first ones to arrive keep on calling and thus attract others; they feel safer against danger (Red kites or humans) but as soon as they decide to come to the ground  skirmishes break out but nothing serious, just a matter to deter the others from their find!
For those whom might be interested, it is best to give them chicken carcasses or  wings rather than meat but it will do if you have only meat
waste.
The colors are weird because I didn't check the white balance before starting this pic session; I tried to correct it but it was quite bad and this the best I managed, so please be lenient! :)

This one is full and perches in the oak, 12 meters from me, not ready yet to leave the site!

You saw them perched, soon you will see them in the air!

  7. Chyba masz jakieś znajomości z tymi ptakami, bo Ci pozwoliły tak blisko podejść :). Cudowne zdjęcia. Pozdrawiam.
Unless you have some familiarity with these birds, because you have allowed so close approaches :). Wonderful pictures. Yours.

  11. Dear Noushka,
Sorry that this buzzard did not let you go as it stayed there perched on the tree. But your photos are fabulous and well worth the wait.
Incredible for capturing almost their facial expressions!
All the best to you and stay well.

  14. Look forward to those flight shots Nouska.

Love the ground shots though! How do you get such ''depth'' of field in your photo's ?

  15. Hello Warren,
That is is a very relevant question!
Since I use the Nikon 80/400 lens, it is easy to keep my depth of field at f/7.1 minimum and when I have good sunlight I set it to f/8.
In order to control easily opening and speed, I block the ISO's to Auto so I don't have to concentrate on 3 settings at one time.
    I hope that helped!

  16. Thanks Noushka.
I usually shoot at F8, but with my 500mm lens there is no depth of field at that aperture until you get further than 5.5 meters from the subject. At 6 meters there is about 1cm depth of field :-) This poses a problem when I am only 4 meters from the subject, as I have to wait for the right pose!

    1. Yes indeed, I use the 500 mm when I know I will not get any closer than 7 to 8 meters from the subjects I decided to photograph. Example: that is the lens I used for my recent duck pictures.
But since the buzzards come close to the hide, the 80/400 is fantastic since I can zoom in and out at will. So the depth of field is not problem.
