Ishnure elegans VS Enallagma cyathigerum

Blue-tailed Damselfly has dinner "with" a Common Blue Damselfly!
Not really a cannibalism scene but close...
On this fabulous site where 10 odonates take off at every step, I was taking pics of something else when my eye perceived an unusual movement. My favorite form of Blue-tailed Damselfly! Its strange flight becomes clear...

It has a sized prey in the mandibles, nested between the legs for a big cuddle... Well, maybe not!!!
The unfortunate Common blue is slightly bigger.

The prey, held tightly between the 6 legs, tries desperately to escape as it climbs towards the end of the grass blade:

The Blue-tailed goes on by slicing off the wings neatly then separates the abdomen from the thorax:

The Blue-tailed has quite a few parasites on the last segments of its abdomen:

Over-sensitivity has no place in Nature:

  1. Wow, what an amazing sequence of photos. I would never have thought of one damsel fly eating another.

  4. Wow, you sure are able to find special moments in nature. Absolutely stunning pics. Great to see how cruel life sometimes is. Even if you know that it happens, it feels a bit different to see it.

  9. Hi Noushka: With this sequence even you have surpassed yourself! It is a truly remarkable series of photographs. As you say nature is only cruel when viewed from an anthropomorphic perspective. See you soon!

  13. I'm sitting here stunned by this post, Noushka. The meticulous precision of the kill has me rethinking my views on the intelligence of insects. Still, I suppose the Odonata have been on the planet for much much longer than we Hominids, and so have had plenty of time to develop their skills!

Superbly documented by you with your camera, this has to be one of your best posts ever!

You got me looking at my books again as I've never seen that wonderful lilac colouration on the thorax of the Blue-tailed Damselfly - which I now know to be an immature female of one of the forms of this species. I shall be keeping my eyes open now, in hope!

    Have a great weekend!!

  16. Bonjour Noushka,
    Amicalement.

  19. Dear Noushka,
Astonishing! Unbelievable that the victim is able to move with only a part of its body left.
Made me think of wild dogs - they sometimes start to eat while their prey is still running.
You made a very good photo-report of it. I think you have a special talent for capturing special moments.
    Best regards, Corrie
