Grèbes et lumières

Podicipediformes - Podicipedidae

Grebes in coloured lightings
Bird plumage varies according to the seasons and in time of parades; the reproduction being a top priority, it is then at its paroxysm of beauty. The rest of the time the plumage is known as eclipse plumage looking similar to that of the female, which allows the birds to blend more easily with the environment. The moult has another advantage: it allows birds and even mammals to regenerate feathers or damaged hairs. Each species has its moult tempo.

Tachybaptus ruficollis

Le Grèbe castagneux est particulièrement fade:

The Little grebe is particularly dull:

In nuptial plumage this bird is the least flashy but still more colourful than in winter:

 Podiceps nigricolis

On the other hand, the Black-necked grebe's plumage remains more contrasted in eclipse:

Podiceps cristatus

Et enfin le Grèbe huppé:

And finally the Crested grebe:

  13. Coucou Noushka,

  24. Little grebe dull? I don't think so, Noushka! Look at all the gorgeous shades of blue in those first three photos! Give me an evening gown in those colors and I would look smashing! Your water colors are artistry! Sending you big hugs!

  25. Ooooooh! Wonderful images of the birds, Noushka, superbly enhanced by the light on the water! Absolute winners. I've never managed to see a Black-necked Grebe in mating plumage - but I'd love to! I'd never describe a Little Grebe as 'dull'. Their character is enough to brighten any sighting.

Wishing you all the best - - - Richard

  27. Hello Noushka

The birds have the advantage of changing plumage according to the weather or their intentions!
    We humans are so limited...

    Many hugs!
