Le Grèbe huppé

Podiceps cristatus
Podicipediformes - Podicipedidae

 Great crested grebe

I have little credit here for these photos: this pair, living in the Réserve Ornithologique du Teich by the Arcachon basin, is well known to lay clear eggs, poor guys... nonetheless, they have their mind set on breeding and take much trouble to build a nest and sit on their infertile eggs! Anyhow and no matter the circumstances, I took great pleasure seeing them at close range and observing their actions  and beauty.

While the nest is on one side, we can also see them on the other side of the road since a narrow chanel connects the 2 coves.

As you  know, I had my share of very bad events in my life recently so today I want to share great news with you:
I am grand-mother for the 3rd time and happy to have this little one much closer than his 2 cousins living in Aussie land!

  1. Noushka....I take great pleasure in viewing these beautiful images of the equally beautiful Great-crested Grebe, how sad their infertility.

Congratulations on your grand-parenthood, and so close to home too.

    My Kind Regards Pete.

  2. Hi Noushka,
That's quite a story about these grebes. It feels a bit strange to see them busy with their nest and eggs, because I normally see this happening in spring. Nonetheless, great shots.
    Congratulations with your grandchild!
    Greetings, Kees

  4. Congratulations, so pleased for you and closer as well than Ozz!
I remember seeing these birds when we were down there and you mentioned to me then, when you saw my photos, that they were an infertile pair. Sad especially as they seem so keen. Keep warm, hugs Diane

  7. Delighted to hear some great news from you, Noushka. Congratulations to you, and to the parents too! How wonderful for you to have new family interest closer to home.

Great Crested Grebe is, by far, the most common grebe in these parts, and so tends to get overlooked. It is, in my opinion, the most spectacular of the grebes, however. I love their characters, and they are delightful to watch in the breeding season. Your captures are excellent.

With my very best wishes - - - Richard
