April 27th, 2017 at 1800 m high in the Pyrenees mountains...

The severe snow storm on the road before the
Bielsa tunnel leading to the Spanish side of the mountains was so bad that I nearly gave up. The flakes were so thick and tight that I couldn't see more than 8 to10 meters ahead of the car. But we were 4 in 2 cars and the general opinion was to go on since most of the time the mountain barrier keeps the clouds on one side and the weather can be very different on the other side, which proved to be true once more. The light was soft once on site and we hoped to see the birds: bearded and griffon vultures.
Others shot fantastic photos there but it was not the case for us this time round, but I am set on going back! Meanwhile, here is the landscape:

Gyps fulvus

Griffon vultureOne can guess a female sitting on eggs between the large roc on the ledge and the bush at its edge:

Gypaetus barbatus

The Bearded vulture (Lammergeier) is closely watched and followed in those deep canyons, this is the reason for the ugly clips on their wings, but since they are "Near Threatened (NT)" on the IUCN Red List, I can understand! Ugly pics but diificult circumstances and these birds preferred flying high over the summits

 Regulus ignicapilla

A Common firecrest
was searching for tiny insects in the branches of a pine next to where I was standing:

  6. I'm just left breathless, Noushka! I expect marvellous wildlife images from you, and you certainly have produced some of your best here, but your landscape images are out of this world too. I'm so glad that the weather didn't defeat you. I hope you were careful that the Lammergeier didn't drop a tortoise on your head! I'd have been delighted to have seen any of those birds - even the Firecrest.

With my very best wishes - - - Richard

  9. Tes petits roitelets sont trop mimis. J'adore.
    Grosses bises.
    ps : rdv aujourd'hui, rien à signaler, ouf !
