Débuts timides du brame en Barousse

Red deer - Ciervo
Cervus elaphus
Barousse, 2017/09/12
Nikon D500 + 200/500 mm

Hereunder the view of the Pyrenees I saw as I arrived yesterday evening at the tree in which I planned to perch while waiting for the mountain Lords.
3 days before, a 10 pointer had come out with a large herd of does and fawns having bellowed a couple of times probably to warn this 8 pointer, but too late for decent photos. Deer are particularly territorial from the beginning of the rut period so I don't think I'll see other males on this field.

Strangely this 4 pointer appeared first before the does but as this field is very curved, I can't be a 100% sure. Nevertheless
the movement of its antlers caught my eye after 8:00 pm, the sun had just disappeared from the field, obliterated by the tall surrounding hills. Not that easy to find the ideal place to hide when intended on shooting wild deer pics in the wild: one needs a field that is a bellowing spot, opened and bright enough, a spot to hide that is at counter-wind to avoid being detected by the animals.

The decor:  clic on the pic to see it in 1920 px.

Once more it is late when this male appears as I was about to climb down from my tree; its antlers nearly indistinguishable from the branches behind him:

He makes sure no human is around, relying on his nostrils rather than on his eyes:

As I leave by night, the magnificent cathedral of St Bertrand de Comminges appears in the distance, perched on its hill:

  7. What a magnificent buck, Noushka! The thick ruff around his neck is as striking as his antlers. I enjoyed the view of the Pyrenees ~ such gorgeous rocks! The cathedral of St Bertrand de Comminges is imposing. I'm always amazed at the structures people were able to build almost a thousand years ago. You've scored a winning trifecta of subjects tonight!

  17. Dearest Noushka,
Wow, what a glorious moment to capture that magnificent 8-pointer at the moment you wanted to leave...
Counter-wind is indeed so important and they get spooky for the slightest hint of danger = humans!
Finally making my rounds again after Irma left us alone and back to normal routine.
Our power got restored after 8 hours but there are many in our region that still have no power!
We were without Internet/TV for 2 days and that is weird, especially during such a dangerous time.
Our Miami, FL friends had not even a power outage. Friends in Venice, FL were days without power but no damage. From our Lakeland, FL friends I've not yet heard a response... a bit worried!
Mother Nature can be oh so cruel at times and so many people lost all they had.
We can only pray for them, aside from helping them as much as possible.
Sending you hugs and stay safe on your adventures!
    Mariette
