Hippopotames...

Hippopotamus amphibius

Boisterous and playful Hippos, but....Of the 2 remaining species actually surviving on the planet, this species is the largest by far and is considered the most dangerous animal in Africa.
Males can weigh up to 2 tons and they put on weight all their lives, unlike females who stabilise theirs around 25 years old. Hippos are the closest living relatives to the cetaceans despite their resemblance to ungulates.

Incisors and canines can reach up to 40 cm long but are useful only for fights and play no role in feeding.

  5. Such fearsome looking teeth, Noushka. with that weight and those teeth too, no wonder they are considered Africa's most dangerous. You have captured some wonderful action there! With my very best wishes. Take good care - - - Richard

  6. These photographs are very impressive! How interesting they are so close to the whale family. This is one more good reason to have a very long lens with you!

Thank you so very much, Noushka, for sharing your fantastic safari images with us!

Gini and I are off tomorrow to explore a vast wetland, with the hope of finding some uncommon birds.

    Have a wonderful week!

  8. Hi Noushka,
They are such powerful beasts and it always is sensible not to get over close, its surprising for the size how quick they can move. A full size male can reach 2.4 metres at the shoulder.
More people are killed in the wild by hippos than any other animal.
    All the best, John

  10. Dearest Noushka,
Wow, who would know that they are close related to the cetaceans, like whales... They are certainly impressive in size.
Those long teeth gives an idea of their head size.
Guess they were begging you for a belly rub when they showed their 4-fingered feet up!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  16. Love that upside down shot, although I have seen a lot of hippos I have never seen them in that position LOL. I certainly would not want to be near a hippo on a dark night, as you say they are the most dangerous of all the animals. When my ex worked in the low veldt in Rhodesia they had outside loos and they were near a river. They had to walk very carefully if they need to visit during the night !! Warm hugs, have a good week, Diane

    Bonne semaine!
    Bises

  18. Dear Noushka,
hippos are such bizarre and weird animals. But they are impressive to watch.
You were able to catch a variety of behaviour in your pictures (in my mind I can alomost hear the sounds that come along). upside down I had never seen before.

    Best regards, Corrie

    Bravo!!

  20. Hi Noushka,
Hippos are dangerous animals, but nothing will go wrong when you don't disturb them. I always like to see them, especially when they are opening their mouth. The last two pictures are hilarious, I have never seen this before.
    Great post!
    Greetings, Kees
