Le phacochère, un mal aimé...

... et pourtant!

Phacochoerus africanus

 The Warthog,
quite an unloved animal!
As you shall see, it can stand up to a leopard or even a lion, and does not hesitate to charge when it feels threatened, especially to protect its young.

Below, a Leopard tries to reach the den of a female warthog to steal a young. The latter will not be intimidate and tries everything to get the cat and to follow her farther from the den.
The young hogs are the delights of many predators among which the Leopard and  a few eagles especially the martial.

Eventually, the mother's perseverance will pay off and the Leopard will abandon.

  1. Coucou Noushka,
Quel moment tu as vécu, vraiment le top.

  2. A magical series of photos, well done on getting these and sharing the story with us. Re the Partridge, you are probably right, but there is no-one close to us who breeds them for hunting. It must have come quite far. It obviously feels safe in our garden but it might get fed up once we are on our way. Yes I am starting to get thihgs put together:-( Keep warm and dry, hugs Diane

So those little Warthog babies are the gourmet food for leopards and eagles alike!
They look so cute, with their brownish mane.
Loved your triomfant photo of the Mama Warthog having her tail up high after completing the chase off!
    Hugs,

  9. Hi Noushka,
Certainly not the most beautiful animal of Africa but I am sure the wardhogs don't care about that. These fierce animals are not an easy catch for lions or leopards. I always like to see them.
    Greetings, Kees
