Introduit en Australie et en Afrique du Sud, ce Mainate est surnommé "la maffia" parce que considéré comme une peste. Omnivore, il possède un instinct territorial très développé: c'est une menace pour les oiseaux indigènes. Il s'est adapté a de multiples environnements. La femelle construit son nid dans un trou de mur ou de tronc d'arbreet pond 4 à 5 œufs.
Il a la réputation d'attaquer les yeux quand on s'approche du nid, ce que je peux confirmer, car nous avons dû en enlever un, fait dans la cheminée. Arrivé sur le toit, mon mari, prévenu de ce fait avait mis des lunettes mais il s'est fait attaqué par les parents! J'ai élevé les 3 petits qui sont devenus d'excellents parleurs, avec un toupet monstre!
