Le Sphécothère de Vieillot

Sphecotheres vieilloti
 Passeriformes - Oriolidae

Australian figbird
This bird is a part of the oriolidae family. It is endemic to Australia, Southern Papua New Guinea, Kai islands and Indonesia. It is common and can be easily seen around parks and protected areas. The male is green-olive with a black cap and a widely red area around the eyes, the female is duller with the stripes on the chest. It mainly eats fruits but also insects and small seeds according to the seasons.

Thanks David for confirming this individual below is also a figbird!
It seems that some females display a bluish ring around the eye, probably a question of maturity or maybe light angle on the pic...
Anyhow, even if this photo as nothing special about it, at least one can see the greenish tinge on the back and tail:

  11. You catch birds from so many angles, that one can't help but get an all-around concept of the bird. Loved photo #4 (Well, I love them all, but I liked this the best!) ~ It looks like the bird is looking at you and wondering what is going on; and, the composition is artistic, everything pulls you into the bird's eye. Have a good one, Noushka!

  12. Great pictures of a wonderful bird that is so exotic for those of us who spend most of our time in the northern hemisphere. Great job as always, Noushka. If ever you publish a bad picture I think we will all fall over with shock!! Big hugs, David
