This post is especially dedicated to you Richard my friend, and you know why...Utterly disgusted and very angry by the stag shooting in the Pyrenees at the rut season, I jumped in a plane to spend a weekend in Richmond, London, to see and admire the Red deer in this huge 1200 hectares area.
I discovered magnificent animals, focused in this period on protecting their doe harem against potential competitors and the passage of their genes to subsequent generations.
The bellowing can be heard from quite a distance away.
Totalement écœurée et très en colère par le tir au brame dans les Pyrénées, je suis allée passer un weekend à Richmond, Londres, pour voir et admirer les cerfs dans une très grande zone de 1200 hectares.
J'y ai découvert des animaux splendides, axés en cette période sur la protection de leur harde contre d'éventuels concurrents et le passage de leurs gênes aux générations suivantes.
Le brame ou raire s'entend de très loin et il suffit de se diriger vers le son pour découvrir cet animal magnifique et mythique!
Relentlessly, the stag looks for females in œstrus; this state only lasts 24 hours, so he goes from one doe to another to scent if one of them is ready to mate.
Inlassablement, le cerf cherche les femelles en œstrus; cet état ne
durant que 24 heures, il passe donc d'une biche à l'autre pour 'sentir'
si l'une d'elle est prête pour une saillie.
I tried bellowing to protect and safeguard my does but they all escaped except for one! I think she was the choice female in the harem, however!

I've just returned on Sunday evening from our drive through Blue Ridge Pkwy, from Asheville, N.C. and into Shenandoah's Skyline Drive. We saw lots of deer and wild turkey. What a drive, in sunshine too! It always saddens me when thinking that some kill this beauty... those eyes!
