Episyrphus balteatus
Diptera - Brachycera - Muscomorpha - Syrphidae
Marmalade hoverfly
Widespread throughout all continents. This female was ejecting her eggs at the base of some plants although usually females lay them in aphid colonies so as the larvae hatch, they feed on them. Like most other hoverflies it mimics the solitary wasp, though it is quite harmless. It can be found throughout the yearin the southern regions in various habitats, including urban gardens, visiting flowers for pollen and nectar: it is among the very few species of flies capable of crushing pollen grains and feeding on them. Only females here!
