Circaète Jean-le-Blanc et Lézard ocellé

Timon lepidus

Ocellated lizard
It
is the largest lizard of Europe and lives in very sunny, open and rocky  scrubland areas. I 'shot' this one in Catalonia, it is the subspecies Timon lepidus ibericus. It is a young individual of about 30 cms in length. Adults can reach  55 to 70 cms, males being the largest.
In the last years there are considered in strong regression on the
European territory and are regrettably one of the seven endangered species of reptiles in France.

Circaetus gallicus

Bad luck for it, among its ennemies the Short-toed snake eagle is not the least. Indeed the diet of this bird of prey is nearly exclusively reptiles and lives in the same arid places.

  1. I thought that the Ocellated lizard was greener than that so I have just learnt something. Great photos. It is sad that so many creatures are on the endangered list and mostly beacause of man! They take over the land, they hunt, they kill for drugs and money. Homo sapiens are the worst sort of animal!
Take care my friend, hugs Diane
