Un bel adulte encore en nuptial se pose sur les branches à droite de l'affût 20 au Teich:

Au loin un autre adulte s'est posé dans le joli décor de la lagune la plus lointaine de l'affût 20. La photo au 800 mm n'est pas recadrée, la difficulté supplémentaire a été "slalomer" à travers les herbes qu'on devine au premier plan:

Recadrée elle donne ceci, mieux qu'une simple photo pour l’identification... Bon soyons honnête, pas une photo de concours mais tout de même une belle performance pour l'objo!

Here-under it is cropped, better that an ID pic but let's be honest, not a prize winner although it is quite a performance for the lens considering I had also to overcome another  difficulty: the tall grasses one can guess in the forefront:

Je reprends les publications que j'avais préparées avant d'aller à Chambord.
Au Teich on rigole toujours en disant qu'ils ne sont pas bien violents, ces petits hérons, et faut dire que sur l'image ci-dessous, ce jeune ne fait pas très intellectuel non plus! LOL!
Bon fini de se moquer d'eux mais qui aime bien....
Ils sont rigolos ces beatniks quand ils se baignent, ils peuvent rester avachis sans bouger plusieurs minutes puis tout d'un coup ils plongent la tête sous l'eau et recommencent à se figer! Faut être patient(e) pour arriver à avoir une action avec des éclaboussures sur les photos! Mais dans les cabanes affûts, on a tout son temps et on papote avec les copain(e)s retrouvés n'est-ce pas Josy, Steph, Robert et les autres??!!! Evidemment, il nous arrive du coup de rater THE action!!!

These beatniks don't look very intellectual when they are about to have a bath and it always make me laugh to see them remain without a movement for several minutes and then taking you by surprise, they suddenly immerse their head and freeze again! Not easy to catch an action with water drops  splashing around!

Mire sur les adultes, leurs attitudes, avec cet œil rouge extraordinaire, ces 3 plumes trichoptiles blanches derrière la tête, et des tons bien tranchés entre le gris-bleu sombre de la tête, le gris soutenu du manteau et ce blanc-crème du dessous.

The Black-crowned Night Herons were 16 all together to fight for the same branches back in September!
I shall focus here on the adults, their attitudes and their looks with this striking red eye, the 2 to 3 long trichoptile feathers on the head, the grey coat feathers, and the creamy white underparts.

Feathers are skin appendages (or adnexa) as nails and claws; they are productions stemming from the skin and characterized by a high rate of a particular protein, a keratin, and often by particular electric properties. They have a protection role against temperature variations, a support function for movement or flight, an aesthetic role and ethological functions (colors, motives, glittering characteristics which can play a role in inter-individual and inter-species recognition, sexual parade), etc... Feather morphology is very variable according to the location on the bird; some have barbules, some are fine and long. In the breeding season adult night-herons grow 2 to 3 long white feathers behind the head called trichoptiles feathers: they look like hairs and are useful for males of several bird species for courtship display.
