C'est une espèce d'oiseaux endémique d'Australie, répandu dans tout le Nord, l'Est et le sud-ouest; on ne le trouve pas en Tasmanie.
Il vit dans les marais, les prairies et à proximité des villes, dans les parcs municipaux où il se nourrit de petits invertébrés aquatiques.
Australian white ibis,
a wading bird widespread across much of eastern, northern and south-western Australia. Its sister species is the sacred ibis. It occurs in marshy wetlands, often near open grasslands and has become common in Australian east-coast city parks. The most favoured foods are crayfish and mussels, which the bird obtains by digging with its long bill.
