The Robin's orange "bib":
Whether the light is luminous or dark, the grey band attracts the eye towards the orange bib, as would a frame.
Spanish researchers worked for 6 years on its interest and its evolution in some individuals. As this bird is very territorial, it was thought up to now that it displayed this bib only to warn intruders that he was the boss on a well bounded territory. Yet it seems that it is also a distinctive mark so that other Robins, especially females, may recognize and determine if individuals are adults, males or females.
It is already known that the young do not display this lively color until after their first molt, they are duller. The area of this orange patch increases between the first and second molt after that, it remains stable with the male but decreases in size with the female.
Next, the researchers studied the grey band around it, it extends on the males but not on the females.
