Un grand groupe de ces superbes oiseaux au long bec courbe viennent s'alimenter dans les champs de maïs du Magnoac, une belle région agricole riche en faune. Ces oiseaux, comme les Elanions blacs, méritent un article à eux seuls.
C'est le plus grand des limicoles de son genre, son envergure peut atteindre 1 m. L' espèce, migratrice dans la plus grande partie de son habitat - hivernant
en Afrique et en Europe du Sud - est extrêmement grégaire en dehors de
la période de reproduction.
Si, en période de reproduction, ces limis se nourrissent de petits poissons, d'invertébrés et de mollusques, le reste de l'année ils mangent également des baies et des graines, des amphibiens, des lézards, des jeunes oiseaux et des petits rongeurs.
