L'Aeschne mixte

Aeshna mixta
Odonata - Aeshnidae

Migrant hawker
Very common in a large southern part of Europe, except the Alps, it is the smallest of the aeshnidae family. Quite recognizable by its stripped thorax brow and yellow, the male has a brown and blue abdomen, the female a brown and yellow one. The flight period is quite lengthy starting in may and ending in december in the southern regions although the abundance peak is in august and september. The following pictures date from the 3rd of october:

Aeshna mixta with Chalcolestes viridis

These last photos date from the 17th of october, they were taken at Le Teich ornithological preserve in Arcachon with the 80/400 Nikon zoom and on a tripod... Quite a good depth of field!

Often males stretch their wings and preen their eyes: plenty of time to do so since emptying the female's spermatheca from previous matings and filling it with his own sperm can take up to 3/4 of an hour!

  1. Fantastic pictures as ever Noushka. I particularly like the pictures with the damsel flies in the same shot. They give a good idea of the size of the Hawker. Amazing to learn that it is one of the smallest!

  10. Hi Noushka,
You surprised me again. Really great shots. Especially the one of the flying dragonfly amazes me. It is really difficult to get a sharp picture. Remarkable that you manage to take a picture with different kinds of dragonflies. Great performance.

  16. Bonjour,
