Bécassine des marais, cool!

 Gallinago gallinago
Charadriiformes - Scolopacidae

Voici les images que mon mari a prises alors que je photographiais les Aeschnes mixtes un peu plus loin. Cette Bécassine s'est approchée très près et a fait sa toilette devant lui!

Common snipe
These are the pictures hubby took while I was busy with the Southern hawker mating wheel you saw yesterday on a lane further off. This snipe came very close and started to preen a few meters from his lens:

Sa queue en éventail est ravissante:

Its fanned tail is superb, the bird is quite relaxed with its feathers fluffed up!

As one can see, scolopacidae can curve voluntarily the last third of their upper beak upwards:

Comme on peut le voir ci-dessous, les scolopacidés peuvent courber le dernier tiers de leur bec supérieur vers le haut:

  9. So Patrick is pretty handy with a camera too! I'm really very impressed. I had no idea that the Snipe could curve the upper bill like that - you had me checking the calendar to make sure it wasn't 1st April and that this wasn't a 'poisson'. Almost as exciting for me as the bill was that beautifully fanned tail. Splendid photos, Patrick!

No Richard, I wouldn't dare play the "Poisson d'avril" trick...... well maybe but not in this case!
In further posts you will see more of these postures!
Thanks for your kind comment :)
