Le Bec croisé des sapins

Loxia curvirostra
Passeriformes - Fringillidae

Photos: Nikon D7200 + 200/500 mm

Red crossbill
Not the prettiest of the passerine birds, but certainly one of the most bizarre.
I was lucky to take these shots up close since the species is very shy and wary; they will remain high in pine trees
for a long time making sure no danger lurks before coming down to drink.Indeed, it is the Northern goshawk's territory
At this time of year it is easy to spot  immature birds from adult females.

On the 2 following pics, one can clearly observe that the upper beak can cross over the lower one towards right or left indifferently... a bit like parrots that can be left or right footed!

  7. I love how the vegetation in the first two large photos brings out similar colors in the bird's feathers. Just beautiful, Noushka! And the third large photo highlights the red crossbill's stunning feathers. And #4 is a photo full of life! Thanks for showing all the life stages and the two sexes of this unusual bird! Sending you a big hug!

  8. Wonderful photos. I have heard about these birds and seen the odd photo, but never seen anything quite like this of them. Magical photos, interesting, and shows just what they are like. Well done. Thanks for sharing these with us all. Take care, warm hugs Diane

  10. They do tend to stay here but I never saw them. They are amazing birds and those beaks so handy for opening the Pineapples. The photos are again so clear and sharp. Wonderful! And to your question if I have been on vacation I can say yes. In March I was in Israel for two weeks and in June two week with my brother at his farmhouse. But perhaps we will go to or Portugal or France again.
    Regards,
    Roos

  13. Dearest Noushka,
Wow, you have been very lucky here to be up close for capturing the unique Red crossbill for all of us to get to know.
For me an absolute first introduction, as so many by you over the years.
Thanks for sharing such rare beauty and indeed, crossing its upper beak left and right over the lower beak.
Enjoy a happy and sunny weekend.
    Hugs,
    Mariette
