Martin pêcheur et larve de libellule

Alcedo atthis
Coraciiformes - Alcedinidae

Kingfisher and dragonfly larva

As the sun rays hit the perch, this female starts her show; after catching a small Mosquitofish (Gambezi) she brings back an aeshnidae larva. The strange green colour is in fact its blood called the lymph and it shows because it had moulted very recently. On the following picture, under the pressure of the beak, the larva had extended its mask; as the bird dropped it, I can only guess this prey was caught by mistake as she might have thought it was a fish.

Preening time:

She is a great show bird: she brings back larger fish most of the time, which allows me a few great shots:

"that is the question"!

The male flies in and perches on a small branch next to her, I am thrilled to have the pair at the lake after the breeding period by the river, but will they remain together in the following weeks... that is the question! The male displays much less orange under the lower beak than she does:

In a following publication, I will explain how to photograph this bird.

  7. Dearest Noushka,
Oh my goodness, what a fate for that just moulted dragonfly larva!
What a majestic bird this Kingfisher is and looking like a super-model in front of your lens!

  8. Fantastic pictures again. It is interesting to read about her choice in food. You remind me of my time in the Camargue as a child. I spent much of my time catching fish to put in my fish tanks! Mosquito fish were my favourite!

    Amicalement,
    Michel
