Spermophilus citellus
Rodentia - Sciuridae
European ground squirrel
This sciuridae can be found in eastern Europe where it lives in steppes and pastures, dry banks, sports fields, parks and lawns; it needs short grass to dig its tunnel system and individual hibernation chambers in which it packs food for the winter month. It feeds on seeds, small roots and insects such as hoppers.
In decline for the last ten years, it is considered now as "Vulnerable"in the Conservation Status, urbanization and road building having at times fragmented communities and prevented recolonisation of empty sites. As all small mammals, it is prey to many predators and a watcher protects it congeners with screechy whistles as it spots danger.

RépondreSupprimerThese are just like our little prairie dogs! And ours are undergoing the same habitat loss and fragmentation that yours are. Such cute photos of a little mammal, made striking by you, Noushka!
RépondreSupprimerI like ugly animals too! They are just as deserving of a place to thrive!
SupprimerGreat pictures, Noushka.
