Touraco concolore

Corythaixoides concolor pallidiceps

The Grey lourie - now called Grey Go-away bird... one can really wonder why??! - is present in arid to moist open woodlands and thorn savanna, especially near water. Gregarious, the species form groups and parties that forage in tree tops. The diet consists mainly of fruits and berries, flowers, buds, leaves, insects and snails.

I took photos of this family group by the river Thamalakane as I was waiting for my breakfast at an inn on the outskirts of Maun in Botswana. This river has no well defined beginning nore clear end, as it fades into the Okavango delta. It is the result of the Thamalakane fault - on of which began to form about two million years ago by the geological process of rifting that are currently splitting Africa apart along the East African Rift.

  1. Lovely set of photos of a bird I know very well. Their call really does sound like "Go away, go away". We are hoping to return next year, but so much going on with FIL in the UK at 97 with Alzheimer’s that plans are impossible to make. Take care warm hugs Diane

  4. Hi Noushka,
Wonderful set of images of the Touraco, this one I have never seen. I have got some images of the Green-crested Touraco, also called Plantain Eaters.
Not sure with yours but the Green has a very loud call when in flight and it appears all the specie have the head mantle.
    All the best, John

  7. It's amazing how a plain grey bird can turn into a spectacular-looking bird by the addition of a large head-crest - as shown by your excellent images, Carine! My very best wishes - - - Richard
