Vols de grues cendrées

 Grus grus
Gruiformes - Gruidae

Retour à Puydarrieux, Hautes Pyrénées, ce 4 janvier 2015
Nikon 500 mmm + convert. 1/4

Common cranes in Puydarrieux,
a place I mentioned in previous posts and quite auspicious for this species' overwintering. It is very well protected by sign posts to prevent non compliant people to get close in order to take pictures. Unfortunately, some disregard them and create havoc which in turn gets the birds to settle as far from humans and their cars as possible when they fly in for the night. It is such a privilege to have such a place in our region.
At last after 3 attempts, this one was successful as the birds flew past over our heads before landing for the night:

Le premier groupe se pose:

The first group lands:

Then others come in with the declining sun:

Finally this last shot before the red star disappears behind the hills:

  4. What stunning photos of the cranes in the waning sunlight, Noushka! Just gorgeous. I enjoyed the snipe preening, especially the one where you could see the white feather in its beak. And that one-eyed white buzzard was something to see. I would think that the loss of one eye would really impact its stereoscopic vision. It might have a tough time hunting with no depth of vision. The shot of your new buzzard with its wings spread was spectacular. I don't have enough of a variety of adjectives to describe your numerous and amazing photos! Have a great evening!

  6. Dearest Noushka,
Oh, fond childhood memories from when I was a little girl when my Dad pointed out when they were flying over and calling... I never will forget their call and loved your photos where you can clearly see they're calling. WHY are there such non compliant people that only shoot photos for the purpose of showing off even if they're completely illiterate about the bird's behavior!
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette

  9. These are wonderful birds and it is really too bad that some morons cannot respect the signs which are posted for their protection, and give them a little peace. They have enough natural hazards to deal with without disturbance from humans.
