Gorilla beringei beringei
Mountain Gorillas
They are sociable and peaceful animals that don’t have much in common with humans, except a look sometimes. They live in polygamous families each family led by a dominant male, the silver back.
We discovered them in Mgahinga national park, after a rough climb in a magnificent forest, starting from an altitude of 2400 m above sea level and after an ascending elevation of 300 m Serene strength, wisdom and reflection are the impressions that immediately emanate from these animals, impressive by their size, slow movements and apparent concentration.
They go about their business quietly without worrying about our presence, almost without a look toward us since they know that our paths will only cross for an hour. And it is as well since we don’t disturb them, and our visits guarantee their protection.
In recent years, their numbers have progressed well, and we hope that the Congo will take the same path as Uganda and Rwanda in their positive steps.

Here is a dominant silver back surrounded by his clan comprising 3 other silver backs, 2 females and 2 youngsters:
The very low light made photography very difficult, I had to shoot at very low speed, full aperture and under-exposition reduced at times to -3! So their slightest movement created a blur against which there was nothing I could do, ie this kiddo swinging on a creeper close to his mom:

These gorillas consume up to 200 plant species but bamboo is their favourite.
Here a silver back is quietly eating a Urea creeper:
Rien d'agressif, un simpe baillement:
Just a yawn:
The Mountain Gorilla in all it's glory. An amazing experience for you, with such a well illustrated commentary.

RépondreSupprimerThanks Mark,
SupprimerIndeed a lot of feelings and emotion with this incredible encounter!
Enjoy your evening!
What an absolute privilege to be able to share a space on this planet with such wonderful creatures. This would have been a 'tears of joy' time for me if I'd have been there.

Hi Noushka,
RépondreSupprimerWhat an experience for you and your party to meet up with these incredible creatures, plus a wonderful set of images and commentary on the encounter.
This is something we did over several years and really got into the group, one of the females that the watcher called Julia really took to my wife and she would come and sit with her, it was absolutely magical.
All the best, John
Gros bisous 🌸
Hi Carine,
RépondreSupprimerThis must have been an impressive and amazing encounter. These animals are huge but at the time normally very peaceful.
I can imagine you enjoyed it a lot.
Greetings, Kees
On ressent bien l'atmospère.
Bisous et merci du partage.
Hi Noushka.
RépondreSupprimerBeautiful pictures of these beautiful animals.
Groettie from Patricia.
Magnifiques photos, Karine.
RépondreSupprimerI'm thrilled that you experienced seeing the mountain gorillas, Noushka! And thank you for sharing your wonderful photos! They're our primate cousins. I've just started reading "Sapiens: A brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari. I would love to truly know why we humans suddenly developed such a large and complex brain, when other primates didn't. I enjoy watching other primates looking for flashes of common behaviors. I particularly like watching mothers and babies and looking into their eyes. Thank you for the precious mother and baby pictures! Travel safely!
Merci
Dear Noushka,

Hello Noushka,
RépondreSupprimerThis is so great. Nice to see how you've made these beautiful pictures. Not easy to do I think.
So impressive. Nice to also pay attention to these gorillas. My compliments!!

Wow!!! Que experiencia tan maravillosa.. Preciosas imágenes.. Enhorabuena guapa.. Feliz fin de semana
RépondreSupprimerDearest Noushka,
RépondreSupprimerThat rough climb to the environment of these Mountain gorillas was worth it.
Even with the limited light, you captured their lifestyle in their own, lush habitat well.
Hugs,
Mariette
