MADAGASCAR - J1

MADAGASCAR Day 1
Our family group consists of 4 people: my brother, exclusively interested in landscape, street scenes and building photos, our cousins absolutely not interested in photography and poor me, desperately looking for any opportunity to discover the fauna and trying not to be a pest!!! Fortunately I accumulated some nice pics to show you... later!
This first day, we were heading south to reach Fianaranstsoa and had to drive 410 km - about 8 to 9 hours, so no fauna pics again and since I couldn't ask our guide to stop all the time, I took many pics through the windows. I discovered a landscape very different from what I had ever seen in my trips, even in southern Africa. The road from Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa winds through
rural mountainous highlands and the traditional houses.

The road from Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa winds through the mountainous highlands.

One of the many traffic jams... the average speed is around 50 kms/h!

Many small stone and brick quarries dot the road:

Et sont transportées de cette façon:

And are transported this way:

Trishaws are very common in all the villages we go through and although the road belongs to everyone, accidents happen all too often.

Des paysages à couper le souffle:

Gorgeous landscapes:

Zebu thefts, 3 very different stories:
Our guide Rajo explains that for some Malagasy ethnic groups in particular the Bars, the theft of one zebu by a young man wanting to get married is considered as an act of great courage by his bride and her family. He takes great risks indeed since the theft of zebus, practised by  the"dahalos" (thieves), is very common and happens on very large scale: it can reach several thousand animals at once.  One zebu can reach 3 times the salary in the countryside; much more than meat on legs, this animal is used for offerings,  the "turning of the dead" (Famadihana), birth, wedding, funeral ceremonies and more. This is why we often see groups of men congregating on the side of the road to prepare for a long walk in order to find their cattle and the dahalos. It is a very real war waging on the highlands and many die, the Police included.

As we were having lunch, I raise my eyes to the sky and I see this lovely star-shaped cloud... running:

Most of the time, the clouds orchestrated for a 3D effect of the images:

While selecting my photos, I listened to Lang-Lang's magical music, what a fabulous pianist:

  1. Fantastic photos, it looks quite barren in places. Some photos of people, and roads reminded me of Mauritius. The roads there were horrific. Love the clouds. Sadly my slow connection will not play the music!!
I have today put on a few more RSA photos as I am getting bored with garden shots!
Take care, I am looking forward to further photos of Madagascar. Hugs Diane

  5. Great shots, Noushka, and I can well imagine that it must have been frustrating for you at times when you were unable to control when and where you could stop for picture-taking. And you are quite right about Lang Lang, certainly one of the top five pianists in the world today and maybe No. 1. Think I might put on a little Chopin right now! Bigs hugs from me to you!

  7. Hoi Noushka.

Beautiful pictures of this piece of world.
    Beautiful landscape photos made you.
Nice the pictures of the population.
Beautiful clouds picture you had to make.
It's fun with others, but sometimes difficult if you just want to do something else.

  9. Hi Noushka,
It feels good to see the same kind of scenery we have seen during our trip, not surprising when you are travelling along the same road. We were lucky enough to get a chance to stop pretty often in order, amongst other things, to take pictures of the scenery. It is aan amazing country, but it is so sad to find out how much of the rainforest already has disappeared. The traffic was interesting every day, in very different ways as you have also shown here. It felt great to see the country again via your pictures.
    Greetings, Kees

  10. Although it must have been very frustrating for you not to be photographing wildlife, you've ended up with some wonderful landscape images and images of local life, Noushka.

Having said all that, I'm looking forward to you getting back to your usual métier!

With my very best wishes. Take good care - - - Richard

  12. Dearest Noushka,
Well, you at least had the support of your brother, to at least get some chances to stop and indulge in this rather harsh environment.
Harsh and often created by men through aggressive deforestation; so sad to see such landslides where it is being washed down.
It takes a lot of education for making them aware of their environment and the need to preserve and HOW to.
Other than seeing still people going barefoot... it is also a criminal habit for stealing zebus and I hope that will end one day.
Yes, poor you and we know the feeling as Pieter and I sat inside a car in South Africa where Pieter saw his ONLY Termitomyces on a rather tall termite hill. We both screamed in awe but our driver did NOT stop for letting him take a photo... One never forgets that special missed opportunity!
But you shared some very worthwhile photos here with us.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  13. Até o céu é bonito. Um cenário quase perdido. O roubo de gado a ausência de floresta... Creio que o futuro não é risonho.
