Kookaburra, le plus grand des Martins pêcheurs

Celui-ci est très grand et peut atteindre 40 cm de long. Natif d'Australie son nom est issu d'une onomatopée de son cri très bruyant, imitant de façon stupéfiante le rire humain, gai mais quelque peu hystérique!

Laughing Kookaburra
These terrestrial kingfishers are large and can reach up to 40 cm in length. Native to Australia and New Guinea, the name comes from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, which is onomatopoeic of its call. Their unmistakable and uncannily loudcall sounds like human laughter — good-natured, but rather hysterical.
 

On ne les trouve pas forcément près de l'eau et se contente facilement de tous habitats, qu'ils soient secs ou humides, naturels ou urbains. Il mange volontiers des vers de terre.

They are generally not closely associated with water, and can be found in habitats ranging from humid forest to arid savanna, but also in suburban and residential areas near running water and where food can be searched for easily.
