Blongios nain

Little bittern - Avetorillo común

 Ixobrychus minutus
Ardeidae
Spain 2017/07
Nikon D500 + 800 mm f5/6E

Male

It is the smallest ardeidae weighing between 60 and 150g. Lives in bedreeds and highly vegetated shores.
If it is still listed LC (minor concern) in the status of UICN
preservation, it is in severe decline in Europe due to the reduction of the swampy areas: the national population in France is considered to be between 500 and 800 pairs only.
The species is migratory and the
populations flying to Europe go back to eastern Africa to winter with the exception of the sub-Saharan ones which are sedentary.
Monogamous and territorial these small herons can flock together in reduced numbers at
migratory times.

  3. Good morning, Noushka! The little bittern photos are lovely! I thought that the picture of the female hunting and looking down into the water was my favorite, until I saw the last photo of the male in flight. Both are gorgeous! I still groan when I think of how I used to think there were long-necked and short-necked herons! LOL Have a happy Monday and a great week!

  7. So beautiful bird, with its long neck when it wants to catch some food, maybe....
I think the population of these birds and many others is declining worldwide because they are destroying their natural habitats. Here in Brazil they are destroying Amazon under our eyes, changing laws, and several species that used to nest there are not coming back anymore. It's a pity...

Beautiful pictures and beautiful week Noushka!!!

  10. Wow, Noushka! What a fabulous study of a species that I have never seen, and am never likely to see - although I would love to. I'm now keeping my fingers crossed as you seem to act like a good luck charm to me - it seems that if I mention to you that I've never seen, or haven't seen for ages, a species that you feature on your blog, there is an uncanny chance that within a few weeks one suddenly appears in front of my lens! The latest was Hoopoe which I was about 10 metres from on Sunday!

Take good care. With my very best wishes - - - Richard

  12. Wonderful series of pictures, Noushka, of species that are far from easy to photograph. In fact they are not even easy to see! Enjoy the rest of the week. Big hugs from Ontario. David
